Every instrument requires care and maintenance to function smoothly. Mechanical watches contain delicate movements consisting of hundreds of individual parts – and top-quality quartz watches also include numerous mechanical pieces. With time, the oil that ensures smooth friction between these individual parts can dry out or small particles of dirt might enter the movement and negatively affect its functionality. When the movement of your watch is professionally cleaned, lubricated and reassembled, your watch will once again show the precise time.

It is also important to know that wear and impact may also affect the watch case or the gaskets and hence damage the watch movement. When a watch is completely serviced, the case is cleaned and, if necessary, refinished and the gaskets are replaced.

Your watch should be completely overhauled every 4 to 6 years. Expenses for making a cost estimate of this service is charged if the customer decides not to have the repair carried out (the costs vary depending on the brand).

We recommend bringing your watch to watchmaker once a year to have the accuracy, the water resistance and the general condition tested and checked.

During such an inspection, the watchmaker also examines whether the watch has any external damage. If the watch has received a shock, the water resistance and the mechanism may be damaged. The earlier such an impact is detected, the less severe the effects on the movement might be. We offer this inspection free of charge.

Watch wearers often ask themselves how much water their watches can take without being damaged. Specifications found on the watch (in meters, feet or bar) do not directly indicate that the watch can be used when diving to the specified depth. This information refers to the static pressure the watch can withstand according to the water resistance test regulated by the DIN standard. Consequently, a watch marked with 30 meters does not mean you can use it to dive to a depth of 30 meters. In principle, it can be said that a “waterproof” watch is never entirely water resistant, but, depending on the way it is constructed, it’s resistance to humidity and water can vary.

Summarized, the water resistance of a watch can be categorized as follows:

3 bar/30 meters – Suitable for everyday use, including accidental splashes from rain drops or washing hands
5 bar/50 meters – Suitable for everyday use and showering
10 bar/100 meters – Also suitable for bathing, swimming and snorkelling
20 bar/200 meters – Suitable for high impact water sports and scuba diving

Different watches are designed for different daily routines and activities and this can be decisive when choosing your future timepiece. If your watch is suddenly running very fast or very slow it could be that it has been affected by a magnetic field. Today, magnetism is present in many devices and can influence the accuracy of mechanical movements. To prevent magnetism in your watch, it is advisable to avoid direct contact with strong magnetic fields. Common magnetic field sources are speakers, magnetic clasps on smartphone covers or bags, refrigerators, induction stoves and airport scanners.

If your watch has been affected by magnetism, it can be examined and de-magnetized immediately in our workshop. We offer this service free of charge.

Depending on the size, model and functions of a watch, its battery lifetime can vary. As a general rule, the battery should last about two years.
If the battery of your watch barely lasts one year, it could mean that your watch needs to be serviced. If the general condition of a watch movement has deteriorated, it tends to use more energy.

The time shown on a mechanical watch can greatly differ from the exact time. Every watch producer has different quality standards and regulations. As a general rule a mechanical watch should be accurate to +20 seconds per day and, on a daily average, a regulated mechanical watch should not be too slow.
